Lantern Night

An 11-second cel-shaded anime scene with one original character in three shots: a sky lantern fades to an ember, then bursts into a starburst and a swirl of fireflies.

A girl watches her paper sky lantern fade to an ember above the river, and her smile falls; then, high in the violet sky, it flares into a starburst and she laughs among a swarm of fireflies. The Wavemaker agent made it from a short brief: three shots, one original character, flat cel shading and an instrumental cue that lands on the burst.

To make your own, describe the character, the place and the turn. Here the agent designed her as reference pictures from the front, side and back, plus the lantern and the empty riverbank, before any shot, and built every keyframe from them so her face, hair, eyes and yukata stay one design. It wrote the music to the cut so its strongest beat falls on the burst, then reviewed the finished file. The download holds the finished film.

How this example was made

  1. Designed the character Front, side and back reference pictures of her, plus the lantern and the empty riverbank with the footbridge.
  2. Built the keyframes Every shot's still was made from those references, so she stays one design across the cuts.
  3. Animated three shots The flame gutters to an ember, the lantern bursts into a starburst, and fireflies swirl around her.
  4. Scored the burst One instrumental cue with a hush as the flame fades and its hit on the starburst.
  5. Reviewed and revised Given a full review of picture, sound and the brief, then revised over three rounds of the owner's notes on how the lantern goes out.

Real and generated. Generated: the character, the places, the motion and the music.

Known limit. The red footbridge is behind her in the first shot and in front of her in the wide shot from behind her, so the geography flips at the first cut.
